Daal (Lentil Soup)

This is a common gravy served with white rice.
Ingredients
1 cup red lentils
1/2 cup dried yellow split peas
2 whole bay eaves
2 green chilies split open
5 Cups water
1/2 cup diced tomato
2 tbsp fresh roughly chopped Cilantro
Salt to taste
For Frying:
1/4 cup thinly sliced onions
2 cloves sliced garlic
1/4 tsp coriander powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp Panch foron
2 tbsp Canola/vegetable oil
Direction
- Wash and rinse the lentils and the dried yellow split peas thoroughly.
- In a cooking pot, add the lentils, the dried yellow split peas, water, bay leaves, green chilies, and salt. Now boil over medium high heat for an hour.
- Bit the mixture carefully and break up all the beans into a liquid form.
- Add the tomatoes and let it cook for another 5 minutes.
- In a separate frying pan, fry the onion and the garlic in the oil.
- When they turn into light golden add the rest of the ingredients and fry for 30 seconds.
- Pour the fried mixture with the oil into the pot with the beans.
- Add the cilantro and let it simmer for another 6 minutes.
- Serve warm by itself or with white rice.
- Sprinkle the red chili powder before serving.
